Yesterday we started the brand new year, 2018; and, in the spirit of the celebration, we’ve decided to take a look back on the films that have been released in 2017. It has certainly been a brilliant year in the world of film, so much so that we’ve found it difficult to choose favourites.
We asked our writers what their favourite films of 2017 were and why. The result shows how incredible that year was, and it totally excites us for the years to follow. If these amazing films were released that year, 2018 is certainly going to be just as good.
If you’re looking for something really enjoyable, check out the films below and follow our advice and watch them all. It’ll be a great way to spend the start of 2018.
Baywatch – Chosen by Katrina Rees (CelebMix Editor)
“I haven’t watched many movies this year but I went out of my way to watch Baywatch when it was released in the cinema. Obviously, Zac Efron was the big draw for me, but it was actually a really funny film. I’d forgotten how awesome Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is too, so his presence made the film even better.”
A Bad Moms Christmas – Chosen by Amber Nordberg (CelebMix Editor)
“There are not many comedy movies that the sequel makes me laugh harder than the first but A Bad Moms Christmas is for sure one of them. I laughed from start to finish, and maybe shed a tear or two!”
Dunkirk – Chosen by Jess (CelebMix Writer)
“One of the only releases in 2017 that kept my attention throughout the entire film was ‘Dunkirk’. The anticipation throughout the movie wondering what was going to happen to the characters kept me on my toes the entire two hours and all the actors did a phenomenal job.”

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle – Chosen by Zoe Adams (CelebMix Writer)
“My favourite film of 2017 is hands down, ‘Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle’, because I seriously don’t think I have ever enjoyed a movie from start to finish like I did this one. Admittedly, I was a little apprehensive when I first booked tickets to go and see it since I didn’t think it would even come close to capturing the same magic as the original movie did but literally five minutes in, I knew I had been wrong. This continuation of the Jumanji story was incredible and it’s definitely a must-see if you haven’t watched it already!”

Cars 3 – Chosen by Michele Mendez (CelebMix Writer)
“I loved Cars 3! Watching it felt so nostalgic, as the first movie came out when I was 10 years old. It was such a sweet movie that made me feel all kinds of emotions.”
Pitch Perfect 3 – Chosen by Rachel Dempster (CelebMix Writer)
“If you haven’t already seen this film, I would definitely recommend it. By far one of the funniest movies to be released this year, and a brilliant way to finish the ‘Pitch Perfect’ movies.”
Thor: Ragnarok – Chosen by Azra (CelebMix Writer)
“Going into the cinema for this movie, I was expecting the standard Thor movie – all seriousness, Loki being the bad guy, Thor being absolutely lost but somehow still wins in the end… I think I actually cried with laughter throughout about 80% of the movie. There were a lot of good movies this year like It, Mother, Spiderman: Homecoming, Dunkirk, Wonder Woman, etc. but Ragnarok definitely took the cake, in my opinion at least.”

Gifted – Chosen by Ashley Dye (CelebMix Editor)
“This is one of those movies that touches you in ways you don’t realize until after you’ve left the theater. On the surface, it’s a story of love and family and how far you’ll go to protect what matters. Under the surface, it challenges you to see people for what they are, not who you want them to be. It pulls on your heartstrings and, let’s be honest, Chris Evans playing the doting uncle was the sweetest thing.”
Descendants 2 – Chosen by Jonathan Currinn (CelebMix Editor)
“If there’s one film in 2017 that we all waited patiently for, it’s definitely ‘Descendants 2’, and boy did Disney tease us throughout the year with various trailers, posters, clips, music videos, and behind the scenes. Yet, we still weren’t prepared for the film when it dropped. It was everything we wished and hoped for, and more; truly stunning, with amazing musical numbers, in-depth storyline, and an awesome cast – Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, China Anne-McClain, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, Thomas Doherty, and Mitchell Hope, all showed their full potential in this film; watch out for these names, they’re going to be the stars of tomorrow.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming – Chosen by J Lauren (CelebMix Writer)
“From the moment Tom Holland was cast, there was a hype for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Luckily, the movie did not disappoint. From beginning to end, the film keeps you captive, and you cannot help but relate and root for the newest Peter.”
Baby Driver – Chosen by Cayla Masters (CelebMix Writer)
“From the music to the acting, Baby Driver was phenomenal. Ansel Elgort’s Golden Globe nomination for his work in this film says it all.”

Beauty And The Beast – Chosen by Lynn Macgillivray (CelebMix Writer)
“The Disney animated version of Beauty and The Beast was one of my favourite films growing up, so I when I heard the live action version was being made, I was eager to see it. It did not disappoint. Between the cast and the effects, it beautifully captured all the magic that one of my favourite childhood films had.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Chosen by Niki Smith (CelebMix Writer)
“Star Wars enough said. One of the best big-screen features of all time. It’s worth the cinema ticket price for the droids alone!”
Power Rangers – Chosen by Kelly McFarland (CelebMix Editor)
“I loved the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as a child. (I wanted to be Kimberly, the original Pink Ranger). So, I wanted to see the reboot to see what it was like. I really enjoyed it and loved the fact two of the original cast had cameos.”
The Space Between Us – Chosen by Annemarie Cutruzzola (CelebMix Writer)
“The Space Between Us was another surprise favourite for me! The chemistry between the leads Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson was on point, and the film had the perfect balance of comedic, emotional, and romantic moments, with a bittersweet ending. The storyline was sweet and compelling, and although I should have seen it coming, the twist near the end totally got me! It hasn’t gotten the best reviews but I genuinely enjoyed the story they told and I think it had a great message (but I am a total sucker for cheesy love stories so maybe I’m wrong)!”
Get Out – Chosen by Byaregal (CelebMix Writer)
“I’ve never fallen for a movie as much as I have with this one. ‘Get Out’ made me feel every type of emotion and the movie had me asking more questions than I did at the beginning. The film gets much better with each watch for me.”
Paddington 2 – Chosen by Nicola Craig (CelebMix Writer)
“A truly British film and one of the first in a long time to make me cry. Now, I won’t ruin this with spoilers but there are so many twists and turns and typically British events taking place throughout. It’s also got a very cute ending…”
We don’t expect you to have watched to them all, but if you have we applaud you! There may have been many great films in 2017 but they weren’t the only favourites of ours.
