Yesterday we started the brand new year, 2018; and, in the spirit of the celebration, we’ve decided to take a look back on the singles that have been released 2017. There has been so much music released that it’s been ever so difficult to choose one defining track that made up that year.
We’ve all got our favourite songs though. That one song that manages to speak to us like no other song can. Usually, it’s because we’ve played that song on repeat so much, it’s embedded itself in our heads. Whatever it is, it’s usually from an artist that we’re a fan of.
So, we spoke to our writers and asked them to choose their favourite single of 2017. With the massive range available, we all found it ever so hard to choose just one. Here’s our round-up of our top singles of 2017, it sure has been an amazing year.
Camila Cabello – Havana (feat. Young Thug) – Chosen by J Lauren (CelebMix Writer)
“‘Havana’ is the first real hit single that Camila Cabello released on her own. So many people doubted her, but it rightfully skyrocketed, leading to a crazy amount of success. Everything about the song, from the Latina roots to Camila’s warm and seductive vocals, is beautifully crafted.”
Harry Styles – Sign Of The Times – Chosen by Nicola Craig (CelebMix Writer)
“Cliché I know but ‘Sign Of The Times’ is my favourite single of 2017 for a multitude of reasons. Yet the main one being the sheer hauntingly beautiful power of the track, it’s meaning and Harry’s vocals. Hearing this performed live in 2017 sent shivers down my spine on each occasion.”
Goat – Grenade – Chosen by Niki Smith (CelebMix Writer)
“JACK MAYNARD CAN RAP. This single is so catchy, fun, and Jack’s megastar big bro Conor has the voice of an angel. Plus, Jack is possibly the hottest guy ever”
Lorde – Green Light – Chosen by Ayushi (CelebMix Writer)
“This song made me look forward to Lorde’s comeback and when the album released, I wasn’t disappointed. ‘Green Light’ is a well-written song and I fell in love with its blunt and unapologetic disgust for the protagonist. Tit for tat it is.”
The Script – Arms Open – Chosen by Amber Nordberg (CelebMix Editor)
“This song is such an underrated single, it’s one of those songs that you could listen to over and over again, it’s just a feel-good song.”
Eminem – Walk On Water (feat. Beyoncé) – Chosen by Ashley Dye (CelebMix Editor)
“This was a hard choice for me as Louis Tomlinson’s ‘Miss You’ was a close second. However, when Eminem returns to music with Beyoncé, you’re forced to give that track attention. After listening to it, it’s no longer one you listen to so you can say you’ve heard it, it’s one you want to listen to. In the spotlight or not, we’ve all felt the emotions Eminem raps about in the tune.”
BTS – MIC Drop (feat. Desiigner) [Steve Aoki Remix] – Chosen by Michele Mendez (CelebMix Writer)
“‘Mic Drop (Remix)’ by BTS is my favorite song. I loved the original, but the remix with Steve Aoki and Desiigner took the song on a whole new level.”
Charlie Puth – Attention – Chosen by Katrina Rees (CelebMix Editor)
“Charlie Puth has released two huge bops this year (‘How Long’ and ‘Attention’) and I struggled to pick between the two as they’re both up there as my favourite songs of the year. Whilst ‘How Long’ is catchy af (and has the most oddly mesmerising video of the year), I’ve picked ‘Attention’ as my favourite as I cannot get over that guitar in the chorus. It’s safe to say that I’m more than ready for Charlie’s album Voicenotes to drop in the New Year!”
James Arthur – Naked – Chosen by Rachel Dempster (CelebMix Writer)
“This is such a beautifully written track that you can’t help but fall in love with it. It is sung in such a way that makes you want to listen to it again and again, and the track’s beauty is just phenomenal.”
Lorde – Perfect Places – Chosen by Byaregal (CelebMix Writer)
“There’s been many great singles of 2017 and this was more difficult than I thought (shout out to Stefflon Don and ‘Hurtin’ Me’ especially). Ultimately, Lorde won the battle and ‘Perfect Places’ still gives me that euphoric and unimaginable feeling that it did on first listen.”
Harry Styles – Kiwi – Chosen by Azra (CelebMix Writer)
“It’s just a song I can unwind to. It’s so hard to keep your composure when you’re in public and this song comes on shuffle. You wanna dance to it so badly, it hurts. It definitely got me out of the bad moods I’ve had during the exam season, so I’m thankful it exists.”
INNA – Ruleta (feat. Erik) – Chosen by Jonathan Currinn (CelebMix Editor)
“It’s just a feel-good song, one I can’t help but dance to. It deserves so much more attention, however, it has reached over 100 million YouTube views, so I’m more than happy about that. An unforgettable INNA song, this is one track that I can’t stop listening to over and over again.”
Carly Rae Jepsen – Cut To The Feeling – Chosen by Cayla Masters (CelebMix Writer)
“The most underrated song of 2017. ‘Cut to the Feeling; is an absolute pop masterpiece and makes me want to fall in love.”
Scott McCreery – Five More Minutes – Chosen by Lynn Macgillivray (CelebMix Writer)
“I lost my granny (the last of my grandparents) around the same time as Scotty lost his grandfather, and with Scotty writing this song as a tribute to his grandfathers, I could really relate to it. The lyrics are beautiful and really spoke to my heart. Like Lauren, I have supported Scotty since American Idol, and it has been amazing to see the journey of his career over the years.”
CNCO & Little Mix – Reggaetón Lento (Remix) – Chosen by Kelly McFarland (CelebMix Editor)
“This was a massive summer song. It’s a great collaboration and makes me want to dance (badly) whenever I hear it as it reminds me of some great summer memories.”
Paramore – Hard Times – Chosen by Annemarie Cutruzzola (CelebMix Writer)
“I somehow only got into Paramore this year (I know, I KNOW) but I had ‘Hard Times’, the lead single from their newest album After Laughter, on repeat when it came out earlier this year. As with many other Paramore songs, especially on After Laughter, ‘Hard Times’ is an upbeat song juxtaposed with sad or heavy lyrics, like, “all that I want / is a hole in the ground / tell me when it’s alright / for me to come out”. I absolutely love that concept and this song pulls it off perfectly; plus, it’s a really catchy song that shows off Hayley Williams’ glorious vocals.”
Rita Ora – Anywhere – Chosen by Zoe Adams (CelebMix Writer)
“Although 2017 has been an incredible year for music, one of my absolute favourite songs from the last twelve months is definitely, “Anywhere,” by Rita Ora. After being MIA from the music scene for two years, I’d almost forgotten what Rita’s voice sounded like but then she crashed back into the music charts with hit after hit over the summer and I think her latest hit, “Anywhere,” was the best because it never fails to put a smile on my face. It’s perfect for any occasion… A car ride, a party, or even just when you’re home alone and you want to turn the volume up and dance around like a crazy person.”
Bastille – World Gone Mad – Chosen by Jess (CelebMix Writer)
“By far my favorite single released in 2017 has to be “World Gone Mad” by Bastille. Even though it was done just for the Bright soundtrack, it was mastered so beautifully that it should be heard by everyone everywhere. After hearing it once it’s bound to be stuck in your head all day and not in a bad way.”
We hope you’ve listened to all these incredible singles. There may have been many great releases in 2017 but they weren’t the only favourites of ours.
