Gina Kushka is the South African performer, songwriter and visual artist who you need on your radar immediately.
Vocally reminiscent of Ellie Goulding, Gina’s haunting tone is completely hypnotic and she showcases it perfectly with her first official single. ‘Cure’ is a captivating and powerful offering in which the songstress wears her heart on her sleeve and opens up about a toxic relationship.
Speaking about the track, Gina said: “I wrote ‘Cure’ after coming out of a six-year relationship. I’d describe the time after the break up as a passionate toxicity, in which we kept going back to each other because we thought it was the only cure for our pain. Instead, we were just constantly re-opening old wounds rather than allowing each other to heal. I wanted to write about this as honestly as I could, because I know this is something a lot of people have experienced. Writing about it eventually became the ‘Cure’.”
The music video for ‘Cure’ shows off Gina’s artistic side too. Directed by Drew Cox (Jorja Smith, JP Cooper), the artsy video combines vibrant bursts of colour and mind-bending effects. The visual has a trippy vibe but serves as a statement of intent from Gina, who seeks to blur the lines between art and music.
