Catie Turner first captured the attention of the masses with her unforgettable audition on Season 16 of American Idol. Since then, her vulnerable lyrics and powerful vocals have helped her build a devoted fanbase.

With a string of popular releases under her belt, Turner has continued to evolve as an artist over time. Following the breakout success of “God Must Hate Me” and fan-favorites like “Prom Queen,” she’s now gearing up to release her next single, “I Might,” on June 6.

In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, the “21st Century Machine” singer opens up about the inspiration behind “I Might,” her creative process, and the connection she hopes her fans feel through her music.

You first caught national attention on American Idol with your original song “21st Century Machine.” Looking back, how do you think that moment shaped your journey as an artist?

I think it is so important because that’s what started the whole journey, not only career wise but mentally. Before Idol and “21st Century Machine,” an artist was something I only dreamed of being.

“God Must Hate Me” really resonated with people online and went viral—did you know it was going to hit that hard when you wrote it?

I had no idea! I remember being so confused looking at the numbers to the point I looked up to the sky and just started laughing at the irony of it all. It feels incredible though when you can write something that finds its people immediately; it’s like a validating hug.

“I Might” sounds like it’s going to be another fan favorite. Can you tell us the story behind the track and what inspired it?

Thank you so much! “I Might” is about my relationship to intimacy and how before a certain someone, I was relating intimacy with obligation. I didn’t know I was supposed to feel safe and comfortable as well! “I Might” is about dismantling those views with the help of a loving partner.

Was the songwriting process for “I Might” similar to other singles you have recently released?

Yes, in the way of it being my feelings and being born out of word vomit & lightening, while also no because the subject matter is a little different than what I’ve publicly talked about. She’s a different one for sure!

You’ve headlined your own tour and shared stages with artists like Léon and Valley. Do you have a favorite song to perform live for your fans?

I love singing “Stepmom.” It’s the closest you’ll ever get to seeing a mosh-pit at a Catie Turner concert.

You’ve built a community of over a million followers. What do you hope your fans take away from your music, especially now?

I hope they feel heard and I can offer them a look through my eyes so they could see that they aren’t alone at all. Brains are a wonderful & dreadful thing, so if I could offer some relief through my music I consider that a significant achievement.

For new fans just discovering your music, what do you want them to know about you and the art you create?

I’m honest, I’m chaotic, [and] I’m not polished, but I think that’s what makes the music real. You’re going to walk away from one of my songs with a strong idea of the type of person I am, for better or for worse.
