Oh, what’s occurring? A Gavin and Stacey Christmas special, that’s what!
Yes, nine years on from the show’s 2010 New Year’s Day finale, James Corden and Ruth Jones have confirmed that they’ve been secretly working on a special one hour episode which will air later this year on Christmas Day.

In a press release, James and Ruth stated: “Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special.
“We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy. We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen.”
If you’ve been living under a rock for the past 10+ years, Gavin and Stacey is a comedy starring Mathew Horne and Joanna Page as Essex boy Gavin and Welsh girl Stacey respectively, who meet and fall in love after speaking to each other on the phone every day in work. The show, which ran for three series, explored the trials and tribulations of their love story, including the impact on their friends and family.
Mathew and Joanna will be returning for the special, with James and Ruth reprising their roles as Smithy and Nessa. Rob Brydon, Melanie Walters, Larry Lamb, and Alison Steadman will also be returning as Bryn, Gwen, Mick and Pam.
Several of the cast have shared their excitement on Twitter, with Rob channelling his inner ‘Bryn surprises Gwen at the barn dance’.

After watching (and re-watching) Gavin and Stacey over the years, we have SO many questions that we hope will get answered during the Christmas special. What’s Gavin and Stacey’s child like? Did they have more children? What about Ness, Smithy and Neil the baby – are they officially together? Do they have more kids? Is Neil the baby still called Neil the baby even though he will now be at least ten years old? Will this Christmas special be as iconic as the previous one? And will we ever find out what happened on that fishing trip?!
We might have over six months to wait, but it’s safe to say that Gavin and Stacey will be the highlight of our Christmas this year.
