Only Fools and Horses’ star Nicholas Lyndhurst will reprise his role as time travelling T.V repairman Gary Sparrow in the hit 90’s sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart.
The show where Gary travels between the 1940’s and 1990’s was a huge hit when it first appeared on the BBC back in 1993 and ran for six series.
In the show Lyndhurst played a T.V repairman married to Yvonne in the 1990’s, who travelled to the 1940’s where he pretended to be a British spy and was married to Phoebe.
The hit comedy ended in 1999 and the one-off special will be set in the present day, but Gary has been stuck in the 1940’s for the past 17 years.
Writers Mark Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran said Sparrow has been “trying for the last 17 years to find a way back to the present”.
The one-off special will be a part of a season marking the 60th anniversary of Hancock’s Half Hour’s first broadcast.
The season will also include new episodes of Are You Being Served?, Till Death Us Do Part, Porridge, and Keeping Up Appearances plus more hit sitcoms from the past.
Speaking about the cast for the new episode of Goodnight Sweetheart the writers said it would feature “much-loved old Goodnight Sweetheart friends and one or two new ones”.
BBC Comedy Commissioning controller Shane Allen said the whole season was “geared towards giving comedy royalty their due recognition”.
He also added about the new episode of Goodnight Sweetheart; “The conceptual update is sublime and it was heart-skipping stuff to read – it’s an absolute belter.”
