Harry’s fans, being the detectives they are, quickly tracked down the piece online and found it to be a handmade piece by designer JW Anderson. And while Harry’s fashion choices always cause an uproar, this particular outfit made its way to TikTok, and now is on its way to being a piece of fashion history.
The cardigan runs for $1,890, but when the designer saw the interest from young woman and men all over the world, he wanted to do something to make it a bit more accessible. He gave fans the tools to make it themselves!
“A gift from Jonathan to all our TikTok Cardigan fans: “I am so impressed and incredibly humbled by this trend and everyone knitting the cardigan. I really wanted to show our appreciation so we are sharing the pattern with everyone. Keep it up!” x – Jonathan”
On the website, you can download the detailed instructions on how to knit the piece at home with nothing more than craft store yarn. And since being publicized, Etsy users across the globe have added it to their shops for a fraction of the $2,000 price tag!
But the cardigan’s popularity didn’t end there. In November, it was announced that the piece would be displayed at one of the world’s most famous museums of art and design, Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The museum has been the home to pieces from Dior and Balenciaga, and now the ‘Watermelon Sugar’ star’s cardigan will be part of its permanent collection. The museum, which supports a more sustainable fashion industry, was impressed with the fact that this piece has led to so many environmentally friendly homemade pieces.
And finally, the cardigan is making one last stop on its long, successful career. It just made its way onto Vogue’s “17 Items That Defined 2020” list! The list is a collection of the most sought after and talked about accessories and clothing of 2020. From the VOTE necklace that Michelle Obama wore at the Democratic National convention, to matching sweatsuits everyone seemed to be dressed down in during early days of quarantine, you’ll find every viral fashion trend on this list.
While the cardigan’s unique pattern definitely helped it make the cut, the designer’s response to the copycat versions seems to be what people are most impressed by. Instead of being upset by the dupes, he’s been encouraging and supportive of everyone taking part! “I quite like that we designed something that has taken on a new type of meaning, a new life. And I think that’s important for fashion today; to be about inclusion, not exclusion.”
