Congratulations on the upcoming release of your mesmerizing new track “Been Here Before”! Could you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind this song and what it means to you personally?
Thanks so much! At the time of writing this track, I had just been let down by someone. This person had let me down countless times before and was displaying so many red flags. I just sat in my room thinking, “I’ve been here before. Am I really prepared to let this person let me down again? Surely I deserve better?”. In this song I’m pondering whether I should continue a relationship with this person and end up realising that I am worth so much more than being treated this way! I guess that is what gives the song a positive spin, as well as the musical elements.
You have a talent for writing, producing, and singing infectious tunes with relatable narratives. How do you approach the creative process when crafting your music, and what do you hope your listeners take away from your songs?
To be honest, this song was a little different as I was inspired to write lyrics because of a situation. Usually though, my creative process often starts with finding a cool synth sound I like and then I come up with a riff using that sound. The music almost speaks to me and gives me words for my lyrics! Sometimes I start writing the chords and riff on my upright piano; this creates quite a different sound. I’m hoping that listeners get carried away in the soundscape but also are empowered to realise their self worth!
“Been Here Before” showcases your exceptional talent as both a producer and a vocalist. Can you walk us through the production process of this track and how you brought together the intricate rhythms and melodic elements to create such an infectious dance cut?
After writing down my feelings, I then got straight on to Logic Pro X and opened up the Serum synth. It’s my favourite synth. I went through quite a few sounds that I had already on there and the one I used for my main riff, jumped out at me. I just played some notes using that sound and the main riff came to me almost instantly. It was then easy for me to create chords and a bassline to go with that. After this, I chucked a drum loop in there, so I could put my ideas on a loop and continue with my vocal ideas. Once I had more of a structure with my song, I then started making my own drum patterns.
Your debut single, “Sunshine,” was released earlier this year and received a great response. How has your musical journey evolved since then, and what can fans expect from your latest release, “Been Here Before”?
“Sunshine” was the start of it all. Before Lady of the House chose to release the song, I didn’t have an artist project and hadn’t ever released anything. So it was a very exciting time for me. Since then, I have been inspired to work on crafting my own sound. A typical Joy Doc track features lots of dreamy synths and emotional vocals that bring you to a different place; expect no different from “Been Here Before”!
You mentioned being inspired by internationally acclaimed artists such as Wilkinson, Pola & Bryson, and Koven. How do these influences shape your unique sound, and are there any other artists or genres that have played a significant role in your musical development?
I love the orchestral elements that artists such as Wilkinson and Koven incorporate. I come from a musical background, playing the piano from the age of five. So my songs always have a musical element to them and I love creating string arrangements. I love the combination between heavy beats and lush string arrangements, alongside a more pop focused style of drum and bass. In terms of my musical influences growing up, I was very much influenced by great pianists and songwriters such as Jamie Cullum and Elton John, as well as bands like The Police. Their songwriting will always inspire me and make their way into my writing.
Both “Been Here Before” and your previous track, “Home,” embody your artistic vision of creating music that resonates with people and uplifts their spirits. How important is it for you to infuse your music with heartfelt lyrics and positive energy, especially during challenging times?
Super important! A positive energy is infectious and we all need a bit of that! I want to uplift people and bring them to a different place when they are listening to my music; an escape for a moment.
As an up-and-coming Drum and Bass artist, how do you see yourself contributing to the evolving landscape of the genre? Are there any specific elements or themes that you hope to explore further in your future works?
I want to be part of the movement of producers who are pushing the boundaries of the genre, not afraid to add in pop elements but also not afraid to orchestrate their music. I love what Camo and Krooked did with Red Bull Symphonic, getting an orchestra to perform drum and bass music!
In addition to your passion for music, you’re also involved in the production and songwriting process. How do you balance these different roles, and what challenges and rewards do you find in wearing multiple hats in the creative process?
It can be tricky when I have a song idea sometimes. I want to get it all down at once, but I need to sometimes stop myself and split it up into the different roles such as the writing/lyric writing element, recording, production and mixing. With dance music, the song isn’t represented properly if it doesn’t have the production elements that are needed to get the message across, even if I’m just doing a demo. However, doing all of these elements means I have a massive amount of control over my sound!
Your career is gaining momentum, and your music is being recognized by audiences worldwide. How do you stay grounded amidst the growing success, and what advice do you have for other aspiring artists looking to make their mark in the industry?
I still work as a music teacher; that definitely keeps me grounded! Even though I love going to the studio, I also create most of my music at home. I feel really grounded and comfortable when I’m doing this. I think it’s important to realise what works for you and what makes you feel at ease. My biggest piece of advice and the only reason why I am doing what I’m doing now, is: Just create! Don’t worry about what other people think, create what you love and it will bring you joy. Don’t be afraid to release your music to the world, you have no idea who it will resonate with!
With “Been Here Before” and your previous releases, you’ve been building a unique sound and musical identity. How do you envision your artistic journey unfolding in the future, and are there any exciting projects or collaborations that you’re looking forward to in the coming months?
In the future I just want to continue releasing all the music I have been creating on my own. It has spent far too long on my hard drive! I’m also currently in the middle of a few collaborations with other drum and bass artists and can’t wait to unleash them. I love collaborating with others; it can create some real magic. I can’t give away any names or dates yet, but expect plenty more releases for 2023!
