Talking about his brand-new single/music video, “Can’t Say No,” singer-songwriter James Hersey says, “I wrote this song the day a friend called me at 6 am crying on her way to work. She’d finally reached a fork in the road – it was either her mental health or the relationship that would survive, not both.”
Lifted from Hersey’s forthcoming album, Let It Shine, “Can’t Say No” revolves around empowerment and confronting toxic behavior in relationships.
Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Jeoff Harris, Hersey blends elements of pop and rock with this innovative song. The full album – Let It Shine – is due September 15th, and promises nuanced lyrical themes paired with meticulously hand-crafted neo-vintage pop productions.
Hersey started out releasing DIY bedroom pop, followed by touring with Milky Chance in 2014. His breakout occurred in 2015 when the rooftop video of “Coming Over” went viral, followed by “Miss You,” which amassed more than 121,000,000 streams.
With over 500 million total streams, three gold certifications, and performances at Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lollapalooza, and SXSW, as well as sharing the stage with Milky Chance, Honne, Metric, and Jeremy Loops, James Hersey’s music continues to evolve and expand.
“Can’t Say No” opens on edgy, alluring guitars topped by Hersey’s evocative vocals, imbuing the lyrics with tight, urgent tones as well as quixotic savors. A funk-lite rhythm provides the foundation for layers of pulsing guitars that switch textures, giving the tune a variety of surfaces inside the song’s contagious melody.
James Hersey has it going on! “Can’t Say No” merges pop and rock vibrancy into a first-class song highlighted by expressive vocals.
