Jodie Foster, the Oscar Winning actress who has also tried her hand at film directing, was visibly welling up thanks to the reception her latest film received at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Her most recent directorial effort Money Monster received it’s world premier on the second day of Canne, and it’s fair to say the film was well received; a four minute standing ovation and enthusiastic applause followed the films screening, from an audience that included acclaimed actors and actresses like Susan Sarandon, Oscar winner Julianne Moore and Oscar Nominee Jessica Chastain.
Starring George Clooney, who walked the red carpet with his wife Amal, and Jack O’Connell, the film has been dubbed a financial thriller and tells the story of an investment pundit on a financial TV show (played by Clooney) and the shows producer (played by Julia Roberts, who attended the Cannes film festival for the first time in support of the film and was seen whispering “This is crazy” to Foster during the ovation) taken hostage live on-air by an investor (O’Connell).
The film, which was screened at the festival but is not part of this years competing cohort, is said to have received a more positive reception than the festivals opening film, Woody Allen’s Cafe Society, which The Hollywood Reporter said was subject to a “modest” ovation.
Money Monster opens in US cinemas on Friday.
