It’s a match made in heaven. Kurt Hugo Schneider, YouTube star and musical mastermind collaborates once again with dance-pop princess Allegra to release another ingenious cover song. This time, it’s Selena Gomez’s latest single and number-one smash hit, “Lose You to Love Me”.
An incredibly personal song about making the difficult decision to break off an unhealthy relationship in order to make the move towards self-love, it was a risky choice to do as a cover. However, despite the personal nature of the song, the cover version picks up on the universal themes of the lyrics, meaning that the song is translated to its more relatable side. The side it focuses on is the near-universal experience of unrequited love and choosing to end an unhealthy relationship.
The camera pans around Kurt Hugo, at the piano, and Sam Tsui and Allegra, sitting opposite each other and holding drum sticks. They sing and belt their way through this emotional number like their lives depend on it, and show proficiency in timing as well when it comes to adding in the drum beats. The whole track is underpinned, of course, by the musical know-how of Kurt Hugo Schneider’s arrangement and piano accompaniment.
But it is no doubt Allegra who we should be keeping our eye on. With a Billboard hit already under her belt, this young talent is certainly not letting her age stand in her way. Already turning the heads of some of the biggest names in the business, Allegra has worked with Chris Herbert (who masterminded the Spice Girls) and the hit making production powerhouse, Audiofreaks, to create ‘All About Us’, a pop masterpiece all about overcoming adversity to be with the one you love. It’s climbing both the Dance/Electronic and Club Songs Billboards Charts (that’s right, two) and shows no signs of slowing down.
Allegra is clearly an artist who has her head set firmly on her shoulders. It’s a combination of her songwriting talent and her clear respect for and taste in other peoples’ songs which has led to her being the perfect choice to cover Gomez’s number one hit. It’ll keep us ticking over until she releases her next hit which, if ‘All About Us’ is anything to go by, will be the next big thing.
