In some sad TV news, the hit American sitcom Mike and Molly has been cancelled.

Despite being a ratings winner  on CBS over in the states the TV network have decided that the the sixth season of the comedy will be its last.

Mike and Molly, made Melissa McCarthy who plays Molly, a household name, as she gained leading Hollywood movie roles in hit films such as ‘Spy’, ‘Identity Thief’ and ‘The Heat’.

The latest season of the funny show was originally planned to feature over twenty episodes but will now only run for thirteen.

The news was confirmed by the CBS president Glen Geller earlier this year saying:

“‘Mike and Molly,’ listen, these decisions are really challenging and I have a tremendous amount of respect for Chuck [Lorre], Al Higgins, Melissa, Billy — the whole cast and crew,” he said. “But I can confirm that this will be the last season of ‘Mike and Molly.'”

Speaking about the the final episode of the sitcom, Geller said: “I think the fans will be very satisfied with what Chuck and Al have planned.” (sic)

The cast of the hit sitcom have shared their disappointment that the show has been cancelled with Rondi Reed who plays Mike’s (Billy Gardell) mother, Peggy on the programme posting a message to the fans on Facebook which read: “Before you hear it elsewhere (and some already have) this is the final and 6th Season of ‘Mike and Molly’ on CBS,” she wrote. “It is also a shortened season (13 episodes) after the announced full renewal of 22 episodes back in March by the network. We are done taping as of January 27th 2016 and I am not sure exactly when/if the episodes will all be aired.” (sic)

Melissa McCarthy has also shared her heartbreak about the long-running sitcom’s cancellation tweeting:  “I was shocked and heartbroken when CBS canceled #MikeAndMolly. I would have shot this show for 50 more years. I’ll miss my 2nd family.” (sic)

The sixth and final season of Mike and Molly will start in the UK on Tuesday the 16th February at 9.30pm on Comedy Central.
