Prince, known for iconic songs such as ‘Purple Rain’ and ‘Little Red Corvette’ sent shockwaves around the globe following his premature death aged 57.
An investigation into his cause of death began at the beginning of May and a law enforcement officer, not permitted to talk to the press, has today confirmed that the singer, born Prince Rogers Nelson, died due to an opioid overdose.
The official autopsy and toxicology reports are yet to be released.
An attorney speaking on behalf of Prince’s siblings revealed the singer had an addiction to Percocet decades before he died. One family member had said Prince started using the drug to help him deal with the pressures of performing, rather than for recreational use.
The day before Prince died, his team called an opioid addiction specialist in California seeking immediate help for the singer, but before the specialist could arrive at his hometown of Minneapolis, Nelson had tragically passed away.
An investigation as to how the singer obtained the prescription drugs is ongoing.
