REVIEW: Sigrid stuns at Newcastle’s O2 Academy

“You just want me to be pictures, numbers, figures, yeah”, Sigrid snaps back at the industry during ‘Business Dinners’, halfway through her phenomenal sold-out set at Newcastle’s O2 Academy.

She struts out in her trademark jeans and t-shirt accompanied by just a four-piece band and an LED screen; the 23-year-old’s rise to sold-out academies is one of the industry’s most well-warranted success stories. And even though she may sing of not caring about the big bad music bosses, the pop star’s ever-ascending acceleration into the limelight is bringing about real tangible success ever so quickly.

At Newcastle’s O2 Academy, tickets had sold-out in rapid time and the Norwegian looked over a Geordie crowd that stretched from barrier to the back door. Jumping into the punching ‘Mine Right Now’ from the off and spending the night dipping in and out of debut record Sucker Punch, it’s crazy to think this is an artist who debuted just two years ago.

Sigrid has very much gone about her business without a murmur. Armed with swooshing pop tracks like ‘Sight of You’ and ‘Fake Friends’, which spring to life on stage, the singer has very much let her music do the talking. And as she winks that, “you might know this one” before the familiar opening murmurs of ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’, it’s plain to hear that the nation has been listening.

The hits just keep on coming too. ‘Plot Twist’ is one of those tracks that even if you think you don’t know, you do, as the rallying final chorus clarifies. ‘High Five’ didn’t even make the cut on Sucker Punch but has wormed its way into fans’ hearts. When it comes to ‘Strangers’, this time last year you’d have thought that young Sigrid couldn’t possibly nail another catchy flick of that calibre, but on Wednesday night it’s not even that hit that closes off the night. She plumps for Emily Warren co-penned venue-filler ‘Don’t Feel Like Crying‘ instead.

With the songbook she already has to her name, it is easy to understand why Sigrid has got so far. This is just album number one… it’s just arenas from here on out.
