Following its successful release last month, the creators of The Secret Life of Pets have announced that a sequel will be released in summer 2018.
Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment confirmed that The Secret Life of Pets 2 will hit screens on July 13, 2018. This will be Illumination’s second major franchise, following the Despicable Me series.
The news comes after The Secret Life of Pets crossed the $400 million mark at the global box office. According to EW, it opened to a best-ever original animation gross of $104 million and sits pretty as the seventh highest-grossing domestic release this year. Of course, there is a lot of life left in the original movie, as it has many markets in which to open overseas.
It has been confirmed that director Chris Renaud and screenwriter Brian Lynch will return for the sequel. No cast members have been announced as of yet, however, the first movie featured the voices of Kevin Hart, Ellie Kemper, Louis C.K., Steve Coogan, Jenny Slate, amongst others.
The first film is deemed as “a comedy about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day.” It focuses on a terrier called Max who’s home life is disrupted when his owner brings home stray dog called Duke. Whilst travelling in the city, they are caught by Animal Control. They then cross paths with a maniacal white bunny named Snowball, and together they must escape and make their way home.
