Whether Leonardo DiCaprio wins an Oscar this year or not, he is guaranteed to receive some kind of statuette thanks to his fans in Siberia.
Around 100 locals from Yakutsk have donated their gold and silver possessions to the ‘Oscar for Leo’ campaign, which will then be melted down to form a man holding a Choron, the local language name for a three-legged goblet “symbolizing peace and expressing people’s love for the actor”, TASS reported.
According to TASS, the goblet will be in gold, while the figure will be silver, “a metal sacred to the people of Yakutia with powers to purify and protect its owner.”
“Many people are still bringing silver, showing they are ready to unite for a common purpose and make it real. This inspires us,” Tatiana Yegorova, one of the tribute’s organizers told TASS. The statuette will be no shorter than 30 centimetres and its head will be facing up towards the sky.
Tatiana Yegorova continued, “Yakutia praises high-quality cinema and considers DiCaprio to be an actor who can inspire and delight his audiences. Since the movie is a mass art form, aimed at the broad masses, we believe that viewers have a right to give this prize.”
This year’s Oscars take place on February 28th so there’s not long to wait to see if Leonardo DiCaprio will get his first Oscar for his role in The Revenant. Whilst he has been heavily tipped to win the Best Actor award, he will have to beat stiff competition from Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs, Bryan Cranston for Trumbo and Matt Damon for The Martian.
We would love for Leo to finally get an Oscar, but either way, he will be receiving a statuette from some of his fans, which will have a great deal of sentimental value!
