Single Review: Activated- Cher Lloyd

Cher Lloyd’s brand new single, Activated, is available now, on iTunes, Google Play and Spotify. Fans have been waiting over two years for new music from Cher, since her sophomore album, Sorry I’m Late. She premiered the track exclusively in her interview with Rolling Stone on Thursday!

Cher’s fans have been tweeting about #Activated around the clock, and most are pumped about Cher’s new song and her new era of music.

Cher has been through a difficult transitional time, after leaving Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco, and finally gaining more creative control over her music. She said in a statement:

I’ve waited two years to have creative control of my own career and finally do things my way. Returning with new music and releasing ‘Activated’ is such a huge deal for me. I’ve been working hard on new music and I cannot wait to reveal more to you all!

Now let’s talk about the song itself, and why it is the perfect comeback song for Cher Lloyd to release.

Activated has a bit more of a mature feel than songs from her previous albums. It leans more towards an R&B vibe, especially in the smooth beat and the faster verses Cher sings. There are some pop aspects, like the catchy chorus and repeated lyrics. It is an interesting direction for Cher to take, and we can’t wait to see how she follows up on her upcoming album.

Lyrically, the song is about getting “charged up” and ready to do something exciting. Cher said about the song: “[It’s] this feeling that I have of just wanting to run as fast as I possibly can and just move.” It serves as a great song to pump you up when you need a boost, or motivation to get something done. The lyrics are quite repetitive, but there are some standout lines:

Let ’em talk, let ’em talk, ’bout me,

No f*cks, swinging from the balcony.

The song oozes confidence and a fighting spirit, which could also describe Cher’s attitude about releasing new music. The song is about being revved up and ready to do something, like Cher may feel after a long period of no new music. Certain lines, especially “They don’t see me coming”, and “When I do the damn thing just watch me”, hint at the fact that this song could be about Cher’s readiness for her new music. She did say the following about Activated:

“I think when we first started writing ‘Activated’ – in the very beginning stages – I had said that I wanted a song [reflecting] exactly how I feel.”

Now we wait for the music video to accompany this fierce single! Cher posted a couple of teasers on her Snapchat, and we have an inkling that the video may be boxing themed…
