New York singer/songwriter Taylor Mecca has shared the first single off of her upcoming debut EP sidelines. The tender and bittersweet indie pop song follows a series of singles shared last year from this rising artist.
“Growing Up Sucks” is all about that time in life when one feels stuck between adulthood and teenager. Reflective accounts of longing, regret, inadequacy and more are highlighted in this candid account of young adulthood. Taylor Mecca confides, “Growing up in my childhood home, seeing my friends move away, feeling frustrated and impatient with myself. Life feels as if it’s moving too quickly for me to keep up, but standing still at the same time. I realized that I was facing the frustrating feeling of growing up as an adult in the same environment I was raised in. We all look forward to growing up, but when it comes around, it just feels more confusing and terrifying than we expect.” The timeless coming-of-age story is perfectly captured with every vulnerable lyric Taylor sings.
The song highlights acoustic textured guitars under stirring vocals full of contemplative ruminations. Reminiscent of Taylor Swift meets Olivia Rodrigo and Madi Diaz, Taylor Mecca’s music is equally nostalgic as it is fresh, highlighting elements of pop and folk for a captivating listen.
Taylor Mecca began sharing music in 2019 with her soaring single “Kick You Out”. Since then the artist has been building her musical catalogue sharing new singles each year. With her debut EP set to release later this year, fans can expect a five song collection of songs all about the ups and downs of young adulthood.
