Oakland, California-based rapper Tia Nomore releases her brand-new single/music video, “Skirmish,” featuring Stoni. The track is the first of five singles from Text Me Records’ next mixtape.
Generally acknowledged as a boys’ club, hip-hop’s male domination is fading. According to Forbes Magazine, “2020 was the year female rappers dominated hip-hop.”
Things are changing because talented female artists like Tia Nomore are pushing their way into hip-hop by means of sheer fearlessness and beaucoup talent. Now 22 years old, Tia began shoving into her older brother’s rap crowd and skipping classes to record hyphy music. Her spunk and ability resulted in recording with producer Exclusive, who has worked with HBK Gang’s Show Banga, Iamsu! and Too $hort.
Tia’s song, “Win/Win,” was featured in Netflix’s Raising Dion and she’s shared the stage with Princess Nokia and Smino, as well as modeling for Sephora’s Kaja Beauty line and Tombogo. Charismatic and friendly, when it comes to music her approach is ‘take no shit,’ evidenced in her candid rhymes.
“Skirmish” opens on a fat, throbbing bassline riding a potent syncopated trap beat topped by swirling, sleazy synths, giving the track luminous, spine-chilling whorls of sound. Tia’s rapid-fire flow rolls out with potent delivery, infusing the lyrics with skintight couplets.
The video depicts Tia and Stoni dressed as male television reporters, replete with mustaches. Then the visuals shift to the two as colossal figures towering over tiny city buildings, reminiscent of the 1958 movie Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.
Simultaneously fun and impressive, “Skirmish” displays the contagious flow of one of hip-hop’s first-class rising female rappers – Tia Nomore.
