Houston-based alt-pop artist Tim Qualls introduces his new album, Feel, a ten-track collection of songs eloquently recounting his life experiences and emotions.
Talking about Feel, Qualls shares, “I hope this piece of art can reset the bar for me musically and really set a new tone for my listeners.”
Renowned for his rootsy, soulful music, Quall’s sound is characterized by its emotional and embellished elements. The genesis of Feel was sparked by the creation of the song “Stay,” a pivotal moment in his musical journey.
Once the artist was able to gain full control over his music, he was able to dedicate himself to crafting a unified piece of art that demonstrated his range as a musician.
The album begins with “STAY,” opening on a low-slung, evocative piano riding a gentle rhythm. A love song, Qualls’ rich, smooth vocals imbue the lyrics with tender emotion, revealing an intense longing for your lover to stay. It’s a beautiful, well-balanced song.
Entry points include “FOREVER,” with its delicious mid-tempo rhythm, softly radiant vocal harmonies, and Qualls’ expressive voice. For some reason, this song conjures up memories of Christopher Cross, with its throbbing flow and pulsing resonance.
A personal favorite, “HISTORY” travels on an elegant piano, giving the tune the feel of a ballad with hints of pop accents adding a luscious creaminess. Qualls shows the range of his voice on this track, including honeyed high notes.
“GRAVE” features a swirling intro, followed by segueing into a dark melody suffused with luminous shadows of pop elements. Dense and portentous, “GRAVE” drips with raw passion.
“MINE” ties the album off, blending moody soul savors with tints of gospel urgency, as Qualls narrates the sensation of being trapped in a spider’s web of love that might prove to be lethal. There’s a sense of building unease running through the song.
Harmonically balanced and wonderfully wrought, Feel is an emotionally visceral album, highlighted by the affecting voice of Tim Qualls.
