ABBA fans, rejoice! Universal has confirmed that a sequel to Mamma Mia, the 2008 adaptation of the stage musical based on ABBA songs, is in the works.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is penned in for a July 20, 2018 release, which will mark the tenth anniversary of the original film.
Mamma Mia was a global box office hit in 2008, grossing over $609 million worldwide. The original film centres around Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and her quest to find her real father. As she is getting married, she is keen to have her father walk her down the aisle. She ends up inviting three men (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård) from her mother’s past (Meryl Streep) in the hope of finding out which one is the real deal.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again will reportedly be a prequel and a sequel. The original cast are expected to reprise their roles, whilst new cast members will be brought in to play younger versions of the characters for the prequel section. The whole story will be woven together by a string of ABBA songs, including a lot of tracks which were not featured in the original movie.
Ol Parker (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) will write and direct the film, whilst Gary Goetzman and Judy Craymer will return as producers. ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus will also serve as executive producers after giving the sequel their seal of approval.
We’ve got quite a long wait for this sequel, but what’s good is worth waiting for, right? Whilst we wait patiently for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, put on your dancing shoes and check out the title song from the original film.
