Berlin-based indie-pop artist VØR just released a brand-new single/music video, “Unspoken,” a track lifted from her forthcoming full-length, debut album, Honey, slated to drop March 25, 2022.
Talking about the album, VØR shares, “There is no fixed topic on ‘Honey,’ in some songs I observe my innermost and share it. My fears, my depression, or what it was like to grow up with someone who is an alcoholic. In other songs, I share my observations and become a kind of magnifying glass for the listener. I address topics that are considered a taboo and that can also hurt – if you take a closer look.”
The album’s title – Honey – is a metaphor signifying the sweetness of self-worth, while looking for meaning in a seemingly disposable world. When she discovers value in the midst of confusion, it’s like honey flowing over her skin – syrupy and fragrant.
VØR explains, “Loving and accepting yourself with all your rough edges is not self-evident for me, I try to get a little better at it every day. The instrumental of the single ‘Honey’ consists almost entirely of me and my voice, which makes the song so authentic.”
Her first two EPs, Liminal and Liminal II, released in 2018 and 2020, respectively, garnered comparisons to Lana Del Rey and Florence + the Machine and allowed VØR to share the stage with artists such as Y’akoto and Bill Ryder-Jones.
“Unspoken” opens on low-slung piano hues, at once melancholic and portentous. A cavernous bassline and syncopated percussion, as well as sizzling, sputtering synths, give the harmonics shifting coloration as VØR’s bewitching voice, reminiscent of Florence Welch with its nuanced, luscious inflections, imbues the lyrics with implicit desire.
“Baby don’t go / Gimme a kiss before you go / Baby don’t go / One more kiss before you go / Baby don’t go go go go go go go go go / Gimme a kiss before you go go go go go.”
VØR has it going on! There’s a sumptuous allure to her voice, at once sensuous, vulnerable, and dangerous, that makes her music irresistible.
