Alfred and Amaia are Spain’s 2018 Eurovision representatives

After months of searching, Spain now has their representative for this years Eurovision Song Contest. Spanish hopefuls Alfred and Amaia have just won the countries talent show ‘Operacion Triunfo’ with the song ‘Tu Cancion’ after weeks of competition. The song is a beautiful ballad with a stunning melody that captures you right from the beginning.

Spain has not won the Eurovision Song Contest since its back to back victories in 1968 and 1969 with Massiel and Salome respectively. After one of their worst results at last years contest, Spain will be hoping they can turn their fortunes around this year and bring the trophy across the border from their Portuguese neighbours.

The country has certainly put the effort into selecting this year’s representative with the talent show ‘Operacion Triunfo’ which has been underway since summer last year. Hopefuls attended open auditions last summer in various Spanish cities. Eighty-one hopefuls were then chosen to attend a closed-door audition before eighteen went through to a live show introduction (Gala 0). Sixteen of these contestants were then chosen to enter the ‘Academy’. Contestants then competed week after week, either performing solely or in duos, to win the public and jury vote. Yesterday, Alfred and Amaia came out on top and will be heading off to Lisbon in May.

You can watch Alfred and Amaia perform ‘Tu Cancion’ below:

As one of the big five, Spain is already guaranteed a place in the final, and we cannot wait to see their performance on the night. The simplicity of the duos song completely reminds us of Salvador Sobral’s winning song from last year, but we will have to wait a few more months to see if it will have the same level of success at the contest.

Spain already has some tough competition from the other acts who are competing. Other acts that have been announced so far are Laura Groeseneken for Belgium, Saara Aalto for Finland, Waylon for the Netherlands, AISEL for Azerbaijan, Cesar Sampson for Austria, Jessica Mauboy for Australia, Eugent Bushpepa for Albania, Iriao for Georgia, Madame Monsieur for France, and Julia Samoylova for Russia.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2018 will be hosted at the Altice Arena, Lisbon, Portugal; with the two Semi-Finals taking place on 8 May and 10 May and the Grand Final taking place on 12 May. A total of 43 countries will compete in the contest.
