Following on from the Best Film Nominations, here are the best actor, male and female, nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globe awards.
BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE- DRAMA
Eddie Redmayne, “The Danish Girl”
Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Revenant”
Michael Fassbender, “Steve Jobs”
Will Smith, “Concussion”
Bryan Cranston, “Trumbo
All fantastic choices and many similarities between these set of nominees and the SAG’s nominees. The only alteration in the Golden Globe noms? The lack of Johnny Depp. Instead of Depp, Will Smith grabbed the nomination for the legendary Globe award.
BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE- DRAMA
Brie Larson, “Room”
Saoirse Ronan, “Brooklyn”
Cate Blanchett, “Carol”
Alicia Vikander, “The Danish Girl”
Rooney Mara, “Carol”
The only shocker here is the double nomination for Carol. Arguably Mara could have been put in the Best Supporting Actress category, making space for other worthy actresses such as Emily Blunt for Sicario and Carey Mulligan for Suffragette.
BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE- MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Matt Damon, “The Martian”
Steve Carell, “The Big Short”
Al Pacino, “Danny Collins”
Mark Ruffalo, “Infinitely Polar Bear”
Christian Bale, “The Big Short”
An interesting choice of crediting two actors from ‘The Big Short’ but no major shocks and surprises here. Matt Damon’s nomination, quite expected and very well deserved for the widely loved and incredibly enjoyed, Martian.
BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE- MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Jennifer Lawrence, “Joy”
Amy Schumer, “Trainwreck”
Maggie Smith, “The Lady in the Van”
Lily Tomlin, “Grandma”
Melissa McCarthy, “Spy”
Amy Schumer continnues to shine, bringing in another nomination this year for her acting in Trainwreck. Maggie Smith pulls a nomination for her role in which she quite literally lives in a van but surprisingly not for her tv serial, Downton Abbey. And Melissa McCarthy, very much deserves to be nominates in the Comedy section as she, without fail, brings fits of laughter to any audience.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE
Kate Winslet, “Steve Jobs”
Jennifer Jason Leigh, “The Hateful Eight”
Jane Fonda, “Youth|”
Alicia Vikander, “Ex Machina”
Helen Mirren, “Trumbo”
Seems to be a strong year for Alicia Vikander with two nominations for The Danish Girl and for Ex Machina. She is however accompanied with fierce competition from Fonda’s brief but strong performance in Youth and Leigh’s performance in Quentin Tarantino’s latest, The Hateful Eight.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE
Sylvester Stallone, “Creed”
Idris Elba, “Beasts of No Nation”
Mark Rylance, “Bridge of Spies”
Michael Shannon, “99 Homes”
Paul Dano, “Love and Mercy”
Both the SAG’s and the Golden Globe’s have credited Michael Shannon for his performance in Bridge of Spies, again showing overlap. Let’s see whether Shannon continues to gather nominations.
