If you live outside of the Netherlands, chances are slim you have heard of Chef’Special before last Tuesday, when twenty one pilots announced the Dutch band will join them on tour this summer. We’re pretty confident this will be the guys’ big international breakthrough, and we’re here to give you a rundown of what Chef’Special is all about.
Chef’Special consists of Joshua Nolet, Wouter Prudon, Wouter Heeren, Guido Joseph and Jan Derks. The five lads formed Chef’Special in 2008 and have been making music ever since, their sound being some sort of mix between the rock of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the funkiness of The Roots and laidback reggae of Bob Marley – sounds like a weird combination, but trust us, it works.
Apart from being pretty great at making their own music, with their album Passing Through shooting straight to number 1 in the Netherlands, Chef’Special also does some mean covers. Their version of Macklemore’s ‘Cant Hold Us’ is one of our favorites.
If you want to check out a full gig of the Dutch lads, we highly recommend you start with the one below. Opening the second day of Pinkpop Festival 2014 in front of roughly 60000 people enjoying the sun, Chef’Special gave one of their best shows to date – if you can watch this without starting to dance at some point, we applaud you.
What do you think? Happy that we introduced you to this joyful band, or did you already know them? Are you seeing them this summer? Let us know over at @CelebMix!
