Rihanna has dropped the intergalactic music video for ‘Sledgehammer’, which features on the Star Trek: Beyond soundtrack.
Fresh from revealing her inner Trekkie, the singer has unveiled a cosmic video, the first ever to be shot entirely in IMAX. Rihanna plays a mystical character, dressed in an orange sari and henna make up. She is later transformed into a powerful celestial being.
The video was directed by Floria Sigismondi in the Trona Pinnacles, four hours outside of Los Angeles. The visual contains several scenes of Rihanna using interesting body movement and choreography. Sigismondi said: “When I look at film, there’s so many ways to communicate, and using the body—especially in a music video, where it’s much more fluid and you can use the body as an art form—really excites me. I seem to create to some kind of body language that gets interpreted.
“You’ll see me behind the camera doing weird things. It’s sort of like becoming one with the music. We talked about motion: if she’s conjuring things up from the earth, what would that look like? Rihanna is just so incredible with her hands. They are mesmerizing. So it’s about giving direction, but they totally become her own.” she continued.
The track, penned by Sia, is a powerful ballad with a striking video to match. There are no film clips in the video but we do catch a glimpse of the Starship Enterprise near the end.
