The Supergirl panel was the place to be at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday (July 21) as the new trailer for season four was unveiled AND some history-making cast news was announced.
Kicking off with the dramatic trailer, the two minute teaser recaps some of the events of previous seasons before teasing scenes to come. There’s plenty of destruction be seen on screen, whilst Supergirl, played by Melissa Benoist, appears to be sporting a slick new suit. The trailer is voiced by evil Agent Liberty (Sam Witwer) who declares “We don’t need their heroes”, suggesting that he is going to make life very difficult for Supergirl and her crew.

Supergirl also dropped some very exciting casting news. In a TV first, the show will become the first live-action series to feature a transgender superhero. Nicole Maines, a transgender actress and activist, will be taking on the role of Nia Nal, also known as Dreamer. The character is described as “a soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others”.
Speaking about this history-making role, Nicole said: “It seems only fitting that we have a trans superhero for trans kids to look up to”. She added to Variety, “I want fans to take away an understanding of trans people. We can be anybody, we can be who we want, we can be superheroes – because in many ways we are”.
Two more new additions to the show were also announced. April Parker Jones will be taking on the role of Colonel Haley, a “hardline career military woman who lives and dies by the orders of her commanding officers.” David Ajala will be playing Manchester Black, “the type of guy who brings a knife to a gunfight and still walks away the winner. With a dark past, he easily deflects the brutality of his mission with his charm and sense of humor.”
Based on the DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Supergirl is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller. The series stars Melissa Benoist as Kara/Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott and Katie McGrath as Lena Luthor.
Supergirl premieres its fourth season on The CW on October 14.
