Whilst The First Purge is currently showing in theatres, over the weekend the first trailer for the television adaptation of The Purge was unveiled at San Diego Comic Con.

The 10-part series will premiere on USA Network on September 4, and it promises to be just as terrifying as the movies. Following the same concept, the TV show will focus on the events of the yearly Purge night, where all crime, including murder, is legal for a 12-hour period.

The dark trailer sees people getting ready for the evening, either by preparing their murder weapons or shutting themselves indoors. It’s clear to see that a number of sub-storylines will be followed, including a girl being ‘purged upon’ by a cult, and brainwashed into taking part in the evening’s events.

The trailer also raises a number of questions, and asks the audience if they would run, hide, seek, seduce, hunt, avenge, steal, lie, party, sacrifice, or even survive the purge. From the trailer alone, we don’t fancy a lot of people’s chances on this gruesome night.

Check out the first trailer for The Purge TV show below.

James DeMonaco serves as an executive producer on the TV series. He wrote and directed the first three movies and also wrote the latest instalment, The First Purge. Speaking about how the TV series will elaborate on the story and character backgrounds, he said: “We follow four what-seem-to-be separate story lines of people going out on the evening and experiencing the Purge.”

“The real estate of the 10 hours of the TV allows us to use flashback, where we flash back out of the Purge world into the regular lives, the non-Purge days, of this future America. We get to see who these people are when it’s not Purge night and the events that led them to where they are on the particular Purge night that we are following. I think it’s a great device.”

The Purge will star Gabriel Chavarria, Lil Simmons, Lee Tergesen, Jessica Garza, Amanda Warren, Colin Woodell, Hannah Emily Anderson, William Baldwin, and Fiona Dourif.
