CBS’ ‘Supergirl’ is set to make its UK premier tonight at 8pm on Sky 1. The show made its official debut on CBS on Monday, raking up a total of 14.6M views on the pilot episode. The show has received nothing but positive feedback from US critics, deadline.com reporter Dominic Patten advising his readers to “check out the strong and smart series that finally put a woman in the lead in this latest age of superheroes.”
The show follows Kara Zor-El (Melissa Bonoist) as Superman’s cousin and superhero in her own right, as she learns to embrace her powers after years of hiding them.Bonoist previously described the show as “telling a story about a human being really realising their potential and their strength.” Supergirl is the first superhero tv show to feature a female lead.
The UK has taken well to DC’s cinematic projects over the last few years, with shows such as CW’s ‘Arrow’ and its spin off ‘The Flash’ thriving among UK viewers. However, both shows only raked in an average of 4 million views on their American debut compared to Supergirl’s 14 million. Supergirl’s debut is highly anticipated in the UK, and is predicted to make a similar impact to that of both ‘Arrow’ and ‘The Flash’.
In an interview with Sky, Adam MacDonald, Director of Sky 1, commented: “We’ve already seen in the success of The Flash and Arrow that comic’book characters are a hit with our customers, and with this fresh, fast-paced new series, we’re giving them another sure-fire superhero smash.”
In the episode set to air later tonight, we see Bonoist in action as she is forced to reveal her powers to the world when an unexpected disaster occurs in her adopted home of National City.
