New for 2017 on CelebMix is our Unsigned Artist of The Week series. We feature a lot of your favourite acts but with so many brilliant unsigned acts out there we want to let you all know who you need to check out. Last week we introduced you to Ellie Rose. This week, we’re introducing you to Sara, an up-and-coming American singer/songwriter.

We discovered Sara while browsing YouTube for the best covers around. Sara is a college student studying psychology in Oklahoma. She is known for posting covers of popular songs on her YouTube channel. Her talent is incredible, as her almost 2,000 YouTube subscribers know well.

Sara first got into music in middle school. Her friend had just switched schools, so she began playing a beat-up piano in the janitor closet. After auditioning for her school’s talent show 8 times over the years, she finally made it in as a sophomore. She uploaded her first video, a cover of 5SOS’s Amnesia, on May 19th, 2014. Since then, Sara has uploaded a number of covers, with everything from Ed Sheeran to One Direction. Her most popular video to date is Shout Out To My Ex:

Her debut single Prisoner is coming out on February 14th. She’s very excited and proud to have something of her own:

“I’m marveling at it. It’s so weird. I asked for a loan to record it, and recorded in a little studio. It was a bit of a test run because all I’ve done is garage band. To have something under my name, it’s like my baby. I cannot believe that it’s coming out. I’m so proud of it.”

We asked Sara a few questions. Here’s what she said:

What is the inspiration behind Prisoner?

I had some help with music, but the lyrics are mine. It’s a gay anthem-ish kind of song. I wrote it near the end of election – I was tired of seeing bull on the TV and in the classroom. The chorus is very empowering.

What musical artists are you inspired by?

One Direction, Ed Sheeran, The 1975, (I like the reason behind their music), and The Eagles dead-ass hands-down are my favorite full-blown band.

Where do you hope to be one year from now?

I want to release an EP this year and an album. By 2018, I would like to be supporting someone on tour and be verified on Spotify. I really want my music to be out [in the world] to spread the message behind it, not for the popularity. I also want to collaborate with other artists.

Do you have any plans for more music on the way?

I would like to have it in the fall. I have a fire under my ass to get going.

If you could tour with any musical act, who would it be and why?

Alessia Cara, she seems cool. Niall Horan and Ed Sheeran. I would love to write something with Ed Sheeran, not even to release, just for the experience.

Thank you to anyone who gave me a chance and didn’t stop scrolling. I hope I can make them proud, the people who watch me.
