Will Jay Releases Music Video for “Leading Man”

Will Jay is a pop singer and songwriter from Los Angeles, California. His family includes two generations of piano teachers. Due to that, it isn’t surprising that Will started playing the piano since he was four and soon realized that he loved performing. He started doing musical theater, which then transitioned to acting, leading him a guest role in TNT’s “The Closer” as well as commercials for Target and Nintendo.

He even had the chance to sing background for acts like Linkin Park and Josh Groban as well as sing in a pop boy band called IM5. Being in IM5, Will performed over 200 shows around the United States and Canada. Since Decemebr of 2014, Will began his solo career.

So Leading Man is officially out! would love for you all to check out the video (link in bio) & buy/stream the song :) I thought I would give you guys a little backstory on the song; since I've been on my own, at meetings with music executives I'd get asked questions like "have you considered starting in Asia?" It felt worse than rejection because I was being told "no" for something completely out of my control. I saw what I was going through as a musician was mirrored by Asian-American actors, with blatantly whitewashed movies like The Great Wall & Ghost In The Shell continuing to be championed by Hollywood. It's 2017 & we still don't have an Asian leading man! So I decided why not write a song about it. Leading Man is 3 minutes of loud & proud confidence, a sonic statement of how I feel in this present moment as an Asian-American trying to make it in show business. I know the world is ready for an Asian-looking pop star & writing this song was truly the first time I thought maybe it could be me. So to anyone listening: thank you. I hope this song inspires you to stay unapologetically who you are & to never shy around from who you could be.

In the Instagram post above, Will shares a little about what his latest music video for “Leading Man” is all about. Some of what he said was, “”Leading Man” is 3 minutes of loud & proud confidence, a sonic statement of how I feel in this present moment as an Asian-American trying to make it in show business.”

He continued saying, “I know the world is ready for an Asian-looking pop star & writing this song was truly the first time I thought maybe it could be me. So to anyone listening: thank you. I hope this song inspires you to stay unapologetically who you are & to never shy around from who you could be.”

With such a powerful meaning to a catchy song, we can’t help but say that Will stole our hearts! Directed by Sunny Beatz and produced by Edgar Olazaba at Redwall Studio, the video for “Leading Man” tells the story of  “whitewashing” of Asians in Hollywood, where Asian characters are frequently portrayed by white actors. In the beginning of the video, the casting director and his assistant are discussing an “all-white kung fu movie” and say, “People don’t want to see Asians in the films.”

Will then turns his hair blonde and his eyes blue and auditions for a second time, being loved by the director unlike the first time when he was himself. By the end of the video, he realizes fame isn’t worth changing who he is. Messages like that are just one of the many reasons to why we love Will Jay.

My name is Melanie Gomez (24) and I graduated with a BA in print journalism with music management as my minor. I loved music since I was a kid because it was always a way my family and I bonded, as well as a way to express myself on my own time as I got older. I’m not a singer and I don’t play an instrument, so my way of being part of the music industry is by getting to write about the music I love in various reviews and through my concert photography. Another goal? To make people smile.
