We’ve yet to properly recover from the ending of the last season of Game of Thrones, when that thing happened to that person and made us all to do this…
But it appears that the time for a new season is almost upon us, and ahead of it HBO have released the very first trailer featuring footage from the upcoming season.
Previously we had only been treated to a short, 42 second teaser that showed no actual footage from the series, only the voices overs of characters and their faces inside the House of Black and White, a prominent location in Arya Starks story arc last season.
This new trailer, though, features footage from all over Westeros and beyond, and a longer glimpse at some of our most beloved and most hated character. Featuring prominently is disgraced Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, reuniting with her brother/lover Jaime and confronting her cousin, her one time lover turned religious fanatic Lancel Lannister. That might seem like it might not end well for Cersei, but with Robert Strong by her side the odds slip slightly in her favour!
Many fans already have a hunch who Robert Strong is under his mask, but it is expected that this series the secret identity of the mountain sized man will finally be revealed.
Elsewhere in the trailer, the focus seems to be on the direct aftermath of the events of last seasons finale; Everyones favourite mother of dragons Daenerys Targaryan was last seen riding one of her dragons for the first time, but unfortunately, upon landing, she found herself surrounded by a Dothraki army, whom have evidently spared her life but kept her prisoner, judging by the trailer.
Ser Davos Seaworth and Melisandre are seen recovering from one of the biggest deaths of last series, and we are treated to a brief showing of Bran Stark, played by Isaac Hempstead Wright. Bran was absent from the last series in order to focus more on other characters story arcs, and not take over the events of the book too quickly. Now, though, it is full speed ahead with the Bran Stark story, and toward the end of the trailer he can be seen standing with his back to a White Walker.
Fan favourites Sansa Stark, her sister Arya, Tyrion Lannister and Ser Jorah Mormont are featured less heavily, alongside the sinister Ramsay Bolton and devilish Littlefinger, but the short glimpses we had of them only got us excited to see more!
The internet is already awash with fan theories, and trailer breakdowns are only adding more excitement, but the trailer was careful to avoid proving or disproving some of the most exciting rumours surrounding the new series, such as flashback scenes of the long dead Stark patriarch Ned Stark, or the revivals of no fewer than 3 characters thought to have died last season.
Despite this season seeing the introduction of book characters like Euron Greyjoy, Samwell Tarly’s family and the return of the Tully and Martell family, none of these feature heavily in the trailer either, nor were we able to spot any glimpses of new cast members Richard E Grant (rumoured to be playing a theatre troupe manager), Max Von Sydow (recast in the role of the Three eyed raven) or Ian McShane (in an unconfirmed but much speculated on role), amongst others.
Either way, though, the trailer served it’s purpose, and we’re now counting down the days ’til the new series premiers next month!
