It’s official – Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars WILL end after Season 7.
The news was confirmed by showrunner and creator Marlene King on a Facebook live stream earlier this evening. The stream also featured stars of the show Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell and Sasha Pieterse.
The news comes as little surprise to fans of the show, considering that King and members of the cast have alluded on numerous occasions that the show was coming to an end.
The final ten episodes of Season 7 will air in April 2017, with a two-hour finale episode.
Speaking of the show’s incredible success, said Karey Burke, executive vice president, Programming and Development at Freeform said, “Through brilliant storytelling, compelling characters and social media phenomena, Pretty Little Liars paved the way for television shows, writers and cast to interact and engage with audiences on a national and global scale like never before, which led the series to unparalleled success.”
King added: “It’s been an honor to work with such a talented cast and crew over the last seven years. We are a family, and it will be hard to say goodbye to a show that has made such an impact on young audiences and been a mouthpiece for cultural change.”
I’m excited for fans to finally have all of their questions answered, and I believe they will be satisfied with the wild ride that is our last ten episodes.
The finale will be followed by King’s new show Famous In Love. Of the show, she said: “I am also thrilled to embark on my next endeavor Famous In Love with Bella Thorne and for PLL fans to get wrapped up in Paige’s rise to stardom and the pitfalls of Hollywood.”
For now, fans have the summer finale to look forward to. Airing on August 30 at 9 PM on Freeform, the episode promises two secrets and a death. King said, “One of the Liars’ life will change drastically after a certain reveal is exposed. There are two big emotional game changers for multiple liars.”
Of course, with a series finale we can expect the unexpected, and this time it seems that Rosewood is going to be shaken by the most spectacular death ever seen on the show, the #PLLDeathTrap. King said: “When I called the actor to tell that person that they were going to die, I did tell this person it is the most spectacular death we have had on the show. It’s groundbreaking for us in the way this person dies, for sure. I think it’s just fun and chilling and also as we get into the finale and the next 10 episodes, we’re trying to come full circle on the show in a lot of ways, and this one sets the groundwork for that.”
It’s fair to say that Pretty Little Liars will keep us on the edge of our toes until the very end. With plenty of homecomings and reunions being teased, as well as twists and turns along the way, we can hope that PLL will have a satisfying ending for all of its viewers.
