Just four months after former band member Zayn Malik announced his departure from the band, the boys (Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan) are stronger than ever as Drag Me Down, their latest single makes it onto the Billboard Hot 100.
The single was released as a complete surprise at 1:00 AM Eastern time on July 31st and it was quite unexpected for most. Now just imagine, lying in bed just about to put your phone away for the night when a Liam Payne twitter notification flashes… with the link to their new single. Let me say this, I for one, certainly did not expect it at all.
Of course that’s exactly what they were aiming for; the element of surprise, the thrill of suddenly having a new song to sing at the top of your lungs and the response was most likely incredible. They have grown out of their old sound; they are still those boys who sang What Makes You Beautiful, only with a more mature sound and their vocals perfected over the years. But that’s not all, in addition to receiving a single out of seemingly nowhere, the One Direction fandom was in for another bombshell from their favourite boy band. The element of surprise was definitely successful but apparently, these boys don’t let their fans rest. Not even 24 hours after the single’s official release, here they were, belting their souls out on stage, to Drag Me Down. See, this is exactly how to promote their music. Drop a single out of nowhere, sing it live the following night, and of course top it off with a pregnancy scandal. They got the public wrapped around them and the next thing we’ll know, the fifth album will blow up the charts.
Perhaps we are really looking at the beginning of a new era for One Direction; they have just proven that while there are only four members remaining, they can still top the charts like it was no problem whatsoever. The song even managed to top the Itunes charts in 82 countries, and went straight to Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart in the UK. Of course, we can’t forget about their entry at Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 which is also the highest debut of 2015. Amazing, is really an understatement.

Now, we just cross our fingers that the boys will get the recognition they really deserve and perhaps that in this so-called new era, the boys will finally be recognized for their amazing singing and song writing abilities because they definitely are worth more than a few scandals.
