Nicki Minaj has claimed her first million-selling single in the UK, with her 2012 smash hit ‘Starships’.
The track, which hit number two in the charts, is the 166th song to reach a million sales in UK chart history. This is based on pure sales alone, and does not include streaming.
Whilst ‘Starships’ has sold over a million copies, it never reached number one in the UK charts. It was kept off the top spot by Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’.
Check out the incredible ‘Starships’ video below and get ready to throw it back to 2012.
Another track has also reached the million milestone today, over 52 years after its first release. Gerry and the Pacemakers’ ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ is the 165th song to sell a million copies. The song has been adopted as the anthem for Liverpool Football Club. It reached number one in 1963, and reappeared in the top 40 in both 2010 and 2012. A new version was released as a charity single for the Bradford City fire in 1985.
