We will also highlight some of our favourite things that were released this month- from music to movies to music videos. First of all, we would like to extend our birthday wishes to Nia Lovelis, Zayn, Grant Gustin, Betty White, Gary Barlow, Adam Lambert, and Phil Lester, who all turned one year older this January.
January 2017 was definitely a month of change and new beginnings. It was a chance for everyone to start afresh, discover new interests and obsessions, and talk about issues that matter. Without further ado, let’s dive into what made January 2017 awesome!
Ed Sheeran
The month (and year) kicked off with this simple video from Ed Sheeran that sent everyone into a frenzy. After over a year of hiatus, we were all ready for some new music from Ed.

And Ed certainly delivered. After releasing two brand new songs, ‘Castle on the Hill’ and ‘Shape of You’, he went on to announce the tracklist of his new album Divide, set to release on March 3rd. Later in the month, the music videos for ‘Castle on the Hill‘ and ‘Shape of You’ were released, as well as European and Latin American tour dates. It’s safe to say that January 2017 was the month of Ed Sheeran.
New Music…
Ed may have stolen the show, but there was plenty of other new music to help us get through the January blues. Lady Antebellum, Zara Larsson, and The Chainsmokers all came back with hot new singles this month.
John Mayer then gave us all a mid-month boost with three new tracks from his upcoming album The Search for Everything. We got to hear ‘Moving On and Getting Over’, ‘Changing’, and ‘You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me’ for the first time, before John Mayer’s 2017 world tour was announced.
And to top it all off, Alex Aiono, Una Healy, Next Stop Mars, and 4th Impact all dropped their debut singles this month- what a way to start the year off with a bang!
…And Music Videos!
This was the month of long-awaited music videos! Here are four of our favourites released this month that we’ve been dying to see.
Bebe Rexha finally dropped the video for her latest single, ‘I Got You’ at the start of this month. She looks absolutely stunning even under the heat of the desert sun. January also brought exciting news about Bebe’s upcoming album, All Your Fault, and an accompanying tour!
Then, January 19th came along and blessed us all with two music videos- from Troye Sivan and Little Mix.
We’ve been waiting for the music video for ‘HEAVEN’ ever since Troye announced it as his next single back in October. It was definitely worth the wait, as we got to see powerful imagery of people fighting for LGBTQ+ rights mixed with beautiful close up shots of Troye and his love interest.
Then, we witnessed Little Mix slay the choreography game in their pastel-themed ‘Touch’ video. The video was released just in time for them to embark on the American leg of the Dangerous Woman tour with Ariana Grande this February.
The month concluded with the heavily anticipated music video for Zayn and Taylor Swift’s song ‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’ from the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack. Zayn and Taylor both look amazing as they destroy a dimly lit London hotel room in this angst-filled video.
The Best of Film and Television
It’s the most wonderful time of the year- award show season! We dove headfirst into January with a host of award shows and nomination announcements. The month began with the Golden Globes, followed by the People’s Choice Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Then, nominations were announced for The iHeart Radio Music Awards, The Academy Awards, and The BRIT Awards. Stellar performance lineups for The Grammy Awards and The BRIT Awards were also revealed this month.
In other TV and film news, the movie La La Land has taken the world by storm with its captivating storyline and beautiful soundtrack. Will & Grace will come back for another season this year, as will ‘This Is Us’ for two additional seasons. There has also been a whole bunch of news in the world of Eurovision, with representatives from Greece, Georgia, Belarus, U.K., and Finland being finalized and announced.
This month we also got a few previews for what the rest of 2017 has in store. The highlight for us would have to be the two new trailers for Beauty and The Beast, set to release in March. The first trailer aired on the evening of The Golden Globes and featured Emma Watson singing ‘Belle (Reprise)’. The final trailer for the movie dropped at the very end of the month, featuring Ariana Grande and John Legend’s duet on the Beauty and the Beast theme song.
January also brought us exciting new trailers for Descendants 2, Tangled: Before Ever After, and Power Rangers. If you want to be in the know about more upcoming movies, we made a handy guide of what to expect from film for the rest of 2017.
YouTube Highlights
January was also a great month for YouTube content! We had the announcement and trailer for Connor Franta’s second book, Note To Self, which will come out in April. Then, the trailer for Gigi Gorgeous’ emotional YouTube Red documentary ‘This is Everything’ was released towards the end of the month. And we can’t forget the awesome news that YouTuber and talented makeup artist Manny MUA is now the first male representative for Maybelline!
Don’t forget to check out our January YouTubers of the Week: Jessie Paege, polandbananasBOOKS, ASMRrequests, Zoella, and Daniela Andrade.
Positive Campaigns
On January 21st, women across the world united to take part in the Women’s March. Thousands of peaceful protests were held in cities across to globe to speak up about women’s rights, racial inequality, and LGBTQ+ rights. Celebrities and citizens alike attended these marches to fight for one common goal: equality. That day, the Women’s March in DC made history as the largest protest in U.S. history.
In another initiative to speak up about important issues, Internet users around the world, including many celebrities, got involved in #BellLetsTalk Day on January 25th. For every post on social media with #BellLetsTalk, 5 cents were donated towards mental health initiatives in Canada. As well as raising an impressive amount of money, this campaign sparked important discussions about mental health and the importance of not suffering in silence.
January was also the month of both National Blood Donor Awareness and National Stalking Awareness. We encourage you to read more about both initiatives even though the month is over.
So that has been January 2017! What’s in store for February, you ask? We already have the promise of a sexy Nick Jonas and Nicki Minaj collaboration, and the month kicks off with Harry Styles’ birthday. What more could we want?
